A Message From the Executive Director
By Joe Taylor

As the Executive Director of Southern Nevada Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust (LECET) a joint Labor and Management fund, my main mission is to promote and support our contractors who employ union laborers. Simply put, I work for you.
The Laborers’ Union has taken a proactive stance to help our contractors have the best tools at the ready. We believe that through better communication, we will take our industry to the next level. Business Managers Tommy White at Laborers’ Local 872 and George Vaughn at Laborers' Local 702 are dedicated to bring out the best that the Southern Nevada Laborers has to offer.

The Laborers' International Union of North America, (LIUNA), is working to create partnerships and alliances in the construction industry that jointly pursue sound market objectives. LIUNA’s commitment to labor-management cooperation began in 1969 with the creation of the Laborers-AGC Education and Training Fund (L-AGC). This commitment was expanded in 1988 with the creation of the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA), and expanded again in 1989 with the creation of the Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust Fund (LECET).
These labor-management funds work together to address three of the issues that most directly impact the union sector of the construction industry: skills training; health and safety; and cultivation, identification and pursuit of market opportunities. 1994 and 1995 have been years in which the Funds have matured into fully functioning labor-management entities that have worked together to secure projects and jobs.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION

Marketing and communication are pivotal components of LECET’s approach to union-sector market share enhancement. LECET uses marketing strategies that include:

•  Public Awareness Campaigns: LECET constantly promotes trust and goodwill within the Union along with  management/employee cooperation. Radio commercials, billboards, videos, direct mail campaigns and press releases are just a few ways LECET promotes this message.

• Publications: A quarterly magazine and a bimonthly newsletter contain interesting and focused information relating to union labor, management and other timely industry news.

• Career Fairs/Recruitment - LECET participates in career fairs at local high schools and vo-tech institutions throughout Southern Nevada to introduce students to the construction industry.

•Trade Shows - LECET promotes union labor at various construction related trade shows.

• Promotional Material: Folders, brochures and other written pieces explain the various goals of the Laborers’ Training Center, LIUNA. LECET and more. These are distributed at career fairs, training demos. Legislative gatherings and union functions.
